Garden
A designed natural environment presented in three stages
- The Challenge
The challenge was to explore an ecological phenomenon through research and experimentation, and to turn the relationships between humans and more-than-human actors into a tangible prototype.
- The Solution
A physical garden model presents three stages of human intervention and natural growth, complemented by an augmented reality application that explains the ecological and conceptual relationships between the different garden states.
- The Process
The process began with two separate observations: an overgrown garden and moss growing in an urban park. By comparing these situations, the project shifted its focus from nature as a designed or unwanted element to nature as an active participant with its own needs. Research into baroque gardens, public parks and garden history then provided the basis for translating these ideas into three connected garden stages. The first stage represents human control, the second the garden’s rewilding, and the third a balance in which human movement adapts to existing natural structures.
