Straks Magazine

Straks
In your face
- The Challenge
The challenge was to bring STRAKS magazine back to life after several years of pause and create its sixth edition. Originally initiated by students, the magazine had to bring together strong bachelor and student projects and the perspectives of creative people while giving each contribution a coherent editorial framework and room to retain its own character.
- The Solution
The result is the sixth edition of STRAKS, bringing the student-led magazine back after several years of pause. Shaped by the idea of being loud, direct and “in your face”, the issue combines student projects, interviews and visual contributions in a flexible editorial system. The concept also extended beyond the pages into the presentation, including a cake that turned the magazine’s visual attitude into a physical experience.
- The Approach
We wanted the sixth edition of STRAKS to come back with a loud, direct and “in your face” attitude. This idea shaped both the content and the visual style of the magazine. The cake being thrown into the model’s face on the cover became a recurring visual motif, appearing throughout the issue and giving the publication a playful but recognisable identity.
- The Process
We started by selecting and researching student projects and looking at how their different topics and styles could work together in one publication. I conducted, recorded and edited interviews with creative practitioners, and researched, prepared and designed the student project spreads.
A key part of the process was finding a balance between consistency and individuality. We created a shared structure and visual system, but adapted the layouts, images and amount of information to each contribution. By designing and reviewing the pages, we worked out what each project needed and how readers would move through the magazine.
